About Langza, Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh

Langza is a village of about thirty houses at 4,400 m in the Spiti valley, sixteen kilometres above Kaza, under a large Buddha statue that faces down the valley. The fields around it hold marine fossils from the Tethys sea, and the peak on the skyline is Chau Chau Kang Nilda. There are no trees. The season is roughly June to October by the Manali road, longer via Kinnaur, and the nights are cold in every month of the year.

Getting here 2 ways in

Nearest airport
Bhuntar (270 km) or Chandigarh (470 km).
By road
Manali over Kunzum in summer, or Shimla through Kinnaur year-round — then sixteen kilometres up from Kaza, which is the last town with fuel.

The final stretch is a mountain road and not one to drive after dark.

Ground floor, one small deep window facing the fields where the fossils come up. The walls are mud brick over half a metre thick, which is the whole technology of a house at this altitude — thin windows, thick walls, heat held from the day. The bukhari is lit at six. We bring more fuel at nine without being asked.

Upstairs, and the window looks straight at the statue with Chau Chau Kang Nilda behind it. People sit in this window for hours, which we did not design for and now understand completely. There is a chair there for exactly that reason. Colder than the Fossil Room by a little, because it is upstairs and the wind finds it.

Seating along three walls, the low table in the middle, and mattresses that come out at night — how a Spiti house has always slept a family. Four comfortably. Groups end up in here after dinner because it holds the heat best and the tea keeps coming. The big bukhari is in this room, and it stays warm until morning.

The hosts

Our house is built the way every house in Langza is built: mud brick, flat roof, small windows, walls thick enough to hold the day's heat through the night. We are above the tree line here, so there is no wood to burn and nothing green after October. What there is instead is the sky, the fossils in the fields behind the village, and a view of Chau Chau Kang Nilda that people sit in front of for hours. We keep the bukhari lit from six, and we will tell you honestly if you have arrived too early in the season.
